Going Down with the Ship,
What is the word that I'm looking for? Mesmerized? No. Hypnotized? Nah. Come on, what is it? The word that is eluding me is what happens when one stares out on Lake Superior. The verbiage doesn't matter as it takes innumerable words to describe the beauty and volume of the big lakethey call Gichi-Gami or by others, such as Longfellow of Lightfoot Gitchi Gumee.
Hey, just a side note; This November, one hears Lightfoot crooning "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" frequently as it has been 50 years ago that the disaster he dirges about took place. Can you imagine? The ore boat was two and a half football fields long and 13,632 tons empty or about 80 million pounds with her load when she split in two and sank 530 feet down in the 39 degree water!
Hey! Snap back. Remember, we are captivated by this body of water which could cover our entire northern and southern hemispheres with 12 inches of water. Otherwise, you could bestow all 8 billion people in the world with over 3,000 half liter water bottles per person to drain her. Now you could empty all of the other Great Lakes in to this cavity and throw in another 2-3 Lake Eries while you are at it. But don't do it yet. We never get to see the bottom. Let's take a gander...
Even though one is able to peer 27 feet down in Lake Superior, we can finally see all the remnants that lie at what is normally over 500 feet to the bottom or 1,333 feet down at her deepest spot. Oh wow! Over there is the remains of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Is this a graveyard or a junkyard? We've accounted for 300 other unfortunate ships and we are not done counting. I've been told that there are up to 250 more yet! And look! Out there in the middle of this former lake are 250 foot cliffs! I thought we would just wander over flatland but over here is the Sleeping Giant cave! Caves! There is amazing topography out here. It's breathtaking!
Besides interesting ecological discoveries, I think that I am going to open a shop with my finds. Oh yeah, agates and rocks that you could never envision. Many log rafts sank out here! I'm going into the logging business because all this wood is preserved as the logs hit bottom and are mummified. Nothing rots in this world for everything has been refrigerated.
There is so much stuff out here. Caribou antlers, all the goods from the shipwrecks! And look! Over yonder is the pair of sunglasses that Nancy lost on her way to Isle Royale. Or is it one of the thousands of sunglasses out here? Cameras, balls, cars. Oh man, I'm going to come and get it all someday but we gotta go back up. Remember, we aren't really under the water. I'm sorry I got us off track. It was fun but we are really on shore, enamored by diamonds floating on Superior's surface.
As spectacular as Lake Superior is or the grandeur of the night sky she is able to reflect, there is a splendor in God's creation that makes these treasures pale in comparison. I know the right description for that word: You. Schmooze? Not at all. Consider this. Each of you contain, on the average, 60,000 miles of blood vessels! Your SA node keeps the heart beating, on the average, 3 billion times in your lifetime. What is the SA or sinoatrial node? It is our natural pacemaker. I don't want to venture too far out into the water again so I'll stay on shore and leave all of this to those who know; who are the experts and scholars. However, I can honestly say that you are truly amazing. Yes you!
That summarizes your body but negates the most important aspect of you and that is your spirit, or as we often idiomatically say, your heart. You are uniquely created so you have, not only a body like no one ever has had, but your personality is so quintessentially made that there is truly no one like you. To lump you in the box of guests or staff misses the mark. You are you and the only you!
Sounding too philosophical? Naw. I'd call it blessed. For 46 years, Nancy and I have had a plethora of staff and guests that have impacted our lives in a way that a million Lake Superiors never could. Has everyone secreted a heavenly aroma? Not always, but the exception far outweighs the norm or we could have continued only a few years, but not for almost half the existence of Naniboujou.
As it is, Naniboujou Lodge was used as an extraordinaire community base - where our family grew up knowing many of you. What kid gets that opportunity? What adult does for that matter? With all of the goofs and mishaps, you have been merciful and kind. Oh, there have been those who indignantly stomped out. Some staff had committed a season of employment but slinked out early. But through it all, you have been there. Yes you. The one that has been breathing ever since we last saw you as you were on your way to completing the 670 million breaths you'll take in your lifetime while emitting 2.5 million tons of CO2.
Thankful? Obviously. Our Lord has been so gracious to us all of these years granting to us some of our most treasured gifts - you. Let me also remind you that if you would like to commit at least 2 months for hire, please get back to us. We have all ages work here and we've loved it. So if you are retired but want a quick tip in the employment pool, please let us know! Happy Thanksgiving.
Love in Jesus,

Tim & Nancy Ramey
